How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
The Cultured Canine's founder, Diane Podolsky, is a certified professional dog trainer (CPDT-KA,) a valedictorian graduate of the highly regarded San Francisco SPCA Academy for Dog Trainers (the "Harvard" of dog training acadamies), a Professional Level Member of the Association for Pet Dog Trainers (APDT,) and a Member of Pet Professional Guild (PPG).
Diane's keen interest in pet dog behavior started, as with many pet parents, when her Maltese dog required special help. Determined to help him, she sought out internationally recognized experts in the canine behavior and veterinary fields. She pursued her own education at the San Francisco SPCA Academy for Dog Trainers. When other pet parents began to turn to her for advice, she made dog training her full time profession.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Each Westchester dog trainer has his or her own area of expertise. The Cultured Canine focuses on the little dogs of Westchester, Greenwich and Manhattan. We encourage our pet parents to socialize their puppies in downtown White Plains as soon as the veterinarian will permit and certainly by 14 weeks of age. Too often, dog training is overlooked when it comes to small dogs, including housetraining, obedience training (we like to call it pet manners), and, most important, early socialization.
Diane's credentials are a rare combination of national certification (CPDT-KA) combined with intensive, hands-on, in-person instruction from one of the most well respected leaders in the dog training profession: internationally renowned author Jean Donaldson. Diane's experience teaching software programs to adults at Pace University is one example of her skill at instructing people as well as training dogs. The ability to communicate, understand, empathize and teach pet parents is every bit as important as understanding the learning theory needed to train dogs.

What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
"Train what is in front of you." This means that even if your dog could do "x" this morning or yesterday, your dog is only capable of doing whatever he or she is doing for you right now. It is from this starting point that you must begin today's training session or this afternoon's training session. Don't waste time insisting that the situation be different. Just start from where he or she is at the moment. Jean Donaldson teaches this at her Academy and it is useful for many, many life situations, not just dogs training.
